Wavra Farms & Nursery
Growing plants has been a part of the Wavra family for many years. Dan started growing his own cannery crops right out of high school. Diane taught school for a few years, and then took time off to raise their kids with the intention of someday going back to teaching. One spring when the boys were still small, Diane turned the farm office into a greenhouse. Every morning she would move the plants from the desk and floor to the outside deck, and return them in doors at night. Dan, growing tired of having to wait for the plants to move in order to enter the office, decided to build a small greenhouse. Dan and Diane agreed on a 30’x50’ so that the boys could have a sandbox in the back, and plants in the front. In the fall of 1999, Dan surprised Diane with a 30’x96’ greenhouse so that she would never run out of room and try to move back into his office. Then in November, God surprised them both. Diane worked all winter planting for her yard and garden. Friends and neighbors started coming by to see what was going on. With just a table, calculator and by appointment only rule, Diane’s extra plants were sold out by Mother’s Day. Just a month later, Catherine was born, joining big brothers Andrew and Steven. Since it was obvious that Diane was not going back to teaching, Dan expanded the greenhouse once again so that the kids would have a bigger “playhouse” and a college fund. We are now entering our 20th year as a retail nursery. The kids have grown and can often be found packing out soil for customers, moving baskets, or driving large machinery down the road. Dan still grows vegetables for Norpac cannery, and has recently started growing filberts. We are a family owned and operated business with close ties to the community. We have maintained ongoing support for many local schools and non-profit organizations. Our mission is to deliver the best products, the best service, and to give customers the best value for their money. Our best customers are those who have had the best results in their gardens with our products and advice. Come give us a try.

StayNortheast Salem (Weston Ct area)
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Salem, Oregon
This DoubleTree is the practical, hedged bet for anyone passing through the Willamette Valley: workaday Hilton polish with enough recent renovation to feel new in parts and familiar in others. The lobby bar doubles as the hotel’s living room — low lights, a cluster of sofas and the inevitable warm DoubleTree cookie passed at check-in — and the indoor pool and hot tub make it a reliable family stop. Rooms range from refreshingly modern to quietly tired; ask for a renovated unit if you want fresh carpet and better glassware. Staff are professional and genuinely helpful, occasionally going the extra mile for private celebrations. The property lives by the freeway and beside a late-night strip club and fast-food lot, so expect some traffic noise; pick a higher floor facing inland. For business travelers it’s convenient to state offices and the nearby wine routes, and for wine-country day trippers it’s a functional base. It’s not glamorous, but when you need clean beds, WiFi, and a solid breakfast, it’s exactly what it promises.

Bentley's Coffee
Bentley’s Coffee is the sort of small, unapologetic drive-thru that becomes a neighborhood ritual. Pull up to the window and a barista who recognizes your car will hand you something carefully calibrated — a bracing cold brew, a plush white chocolate mocha, or a matcha made with real, bright green tea. It’s fast but not frantic, service that feels practiced and personal rather than corporate. The menu leans fruity and seasonal, with parfaits and real-fruit smoothies sharing space with inventive energy-drink fusions. Locals treat it like a reliable pick-me-up on the way to work or youth sports, while visitors discover how a compact counter and friendly faces can anchor a community. There’s a rewards app and a small culture of regulars; staff remember names and orders and the shop even shows up in local causes. If you want coffee with personality and no pretension, Bentley’s serves it at a brisk, efficient pace — no seating, no fuss, just genuinely good, familiar drinks delivered like a small-town blessing.
DiningDowntown Salem
The Cozy Taberna
Tucked into a quiet side street of downtown Salem, The Cozy Taberna feels like a small, stubbornly authentic slice of Spain lodged in the Pacific Northwest. Dimly lit booths on the main floor give way to a low-slung lounge below where groups linger over shared plates and house-selected wines. The bar is a theater unto itself — a long counter, a barkeep who knows local drafts by name, and twenty-four taps that draw a crowd after work. The kitchen traffics in bold, playful flavors: black squid ink pasta that stains your fork and refuses to stop tasting good, bacon-wrapped dates that melt into the wine, and citrus-and-nut salads that cut through the richness. Locals treat it as the city’s celebratory room; couples and out-of-towners come for anniversaries and date nights. The team leans into hospitality — they’ll fit you in, seat your party in the lower lounge, or hold the big table for a birthday. It’s small-town Salem at its best: civic pride disguised as fine casual dining, where the meal feels like an event.

Benedetto Vineyards
Benedetto Vineyards is a low-key Willamette Valley hideaway that feels like someone invited you into their best backyard party. On Friday nights the gravel courtyard glows with fire pits and a jittery hum of live music while folks trade wine flights for bowls of house clam chowder — a humble, perfectly seasoned comfort dish that draws locals and visitors alike. The tasting room leans casual: wooden benches, a fireplace corner where conversations settle in, and wide views of vine rows falling away into orchards. It stays open later than many nearby wineries, which makes evening visits feel deliberate and unhurried. Families are welcome; there are games for kids and enough room to spread out. Locals use it as a community anchor and musicians treat it like a small-stage stop on weekend nights. For anyone exploring Willamette Valley wines without the pretense, Benedetto is that approachable, music-filled tasting with honest pours, a campfire vibe, and the kind of hospitality that sends you home with a bottle and a story.

Adam's Rib Smoke House
Adam’s Rib Smoke House is the kind of neighborhood joint that refuses to pretend. Tucked a block from Willamette University on State Street, it’s a compact, family-run pit where plates come piled and sauces are taken seriously — a wall of house blends that invite argument. The room is casual: picnic tables, a handful of outdoor seats, and the steady hum of students and locals trading slices of life over ribs and burgers. Some meats land perfectly smoky and tender; others run a touch dry, which the staff usually tries to fix with extra sauce or a replacement. You’ll pay modest prices and leave full; the Goliath burger and baby back ribs are the showpieces, and the beer list leans local. It’s not polished fine dining, it’s a humble anchor for the neighborhood — a place where alumni bring friends, students grab late lunches, and regulars keep coming back for the sauce stash and familiar faces.
